Objectives and Profile of Third Study Cycle

Cultural Studies (CULT) cycle III study program at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences International University of Sarajevo offers comprehensive and integrated doctorate that emphasizes the cultural knowledge, scientific research and social and cultural analysis. The CULT program III study cycle provides the knowledge, analytical skills and scientific research training and offers a rich opportunity for specialization, especially after the completion of a doctoral dissertation. The program aims to educate, and produces high-quality researchers and analysts in the field of cultural studies.

Despite the recent establishment IUS seeks to attract prospective students to III cycle. With this fact in mind and demand, CULT program III study cycle is designed for international as well as domestic students who are planning to get a high quality education in Sarajevo, one of the most culturally distinct and attractive  cities in the Balkans. The doctoral program aims to provide an integrated education in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary environment. The program supports multidisciplinary research projects and dissertations that transcend traditional academic boundaries. The program provides the opportunity for candidates to establish close relationships with professors who have a narrow specialization in order to continue to make high specialization upon completion of research projects, dissertations, and scholarly activities.

Courses in III cycle deal with contemporary issues and ways in which international political and social institutions should respond to them with regard to globalization and social and cultural change. In addition, the teaching staff encompasses motivated and dynamic teachers who emphasize teaching, learning, theory, practice and research. The teaching staff is well known locally and internationally for his scientific contributions in various fields of research. Teaching staff use interactive and holistic methods in teaching and devotes considerable time and effort for the benefit and education of students.

CULT III cycle of study program provides an opportunity for the candidates, especially for students who end the cycle II study of Cultural Studies, to continue the cycle III study i.e. doctoral studies. The program is also open to qualified students who have completed the second cycle study programs whose master's work is in other scientific areas but related with CULT. Upon successful completion of cycle II (300 credits) candidates may enroll doctoral program which requires the completion of a total of 180 credits.

The main goal of CULT doctoral studies is to produce experts in the field of Cultural Studies, with a particular focus on Anthropology and Film and Media Studies. Therefore, the curriculum places significant importance on research and methodological subjects such as science and research methodology, and preparation of the doctoral dissertation. Such courses provide students with necessary theoretical understanding of the scientific research process as well as practical knowledge about various methods such as content analysis, historical analysis, film analysis, observational scientific research, experimental research, comparative research methods and evaluation research.

The program also offers a number of subjects in the field of cultural studies. Such courses are offered in order to provide students with essential knowledge of the cultural theories, film aesthetics, nation, race and ethnicity, social institutions, cultural diversity and management. When they gained adequate knowledge and skills on scientific research methods, cultural analysis, and socio-political knowledge throughout the courses students can acquire further specialization through successful completion of a doctoral dissertation. Therefore, upon completion of the doctoral program graduates from third cycle will become research experts and social, cultural analysts who will be able to explore a variety of social, artistic, literary and political themes. They will possess excellent analytical, critical and creative skills, particularly in relation to contemporary issues and cases.

Learning objectives at the program of study are:

  • To train and produce high-quality researchers in cultural studies, analysts, consultants, art, literature and film critics, film theorists, and policy-makers;
  • To produce experts who possess the knowledge, skills, and research skills and writing the dissertation;
  • To place emphasis on research of contemporary problems and policy analysis in the field of cultural studies and cultural heritage;
  • To offer interdisciplinary curriculum and supervision to meet the demands and expectations of students in terms of knowledge, research and skills;
  • To lay emphasis on the student's abilities to critically evaluate obtained knowledge and research data in the process of writing research projects and dissertations;
  • To extend students' knowledge of anthropological theories of cultures in the region and across the globe;
  • To improve students' knowledge of the range of cultures and cross-cultural communication at an international level. 

Learning Outcomes of Third Study Cycle

After completion of the study program, students will be able to:

  • To apply knowledge, skills and research capabilities in the field of cultural studies, especially in the area of specialization in the dissertation;
  • To develop design, develop  plan, and conduct research and policy analysis
  • To analyze, assess, evaluate and connect ideas related to cultural studies theories and contemporary issues;
  • To effectively communicate research and academic ideas in the teaching process and addressing the wider academic community;
  • To identify  and solve theoretical and methodological problems;
  • To critically analyze and evaluate a broad range of  issues related to cultural production and export and cultural heritage
  • To provide an original contribution to the scientific field through the completion of an original thesis.
